“Lizzie?”

Elizabeth’s eyes flew open. She could see nothing in the pitch black surrounding her on all sides. Then she felt the hood that completely covered her face lift away. Her frizzy hair fell like curtains, obscuring her view, so she blew it out of the way and looked up. Jane was standing over her, with one hand on her hip and a severe look in her eyes. She tried to move, but her brain was too fuzzy to send the signal out to her arms and legs. “Jane?” Lifting her head slightly, she squeezed her eyes shut to prevent them from being pushed straight out of her skull. “Ohhhh,” she groaned.

“Please, take your time.”

She managed to pull her hands up beneath her torso in order to push herself to an upright position. She attempted to swallow, but her mouth was as dry as the Sahara, and twice as hot. The jackhammer on her temple refused to cease its drilling. “Where am I?” she croaked.

A voice beside her suddenly cried out, “Release the kraken!” Startled, she jerked her head to see Millie’s foot inches from her face. She was sprawled, spread-eagled and upside down next to her, apparently talking in her sleep as she was already back to snoring heavily. She was also still wearing her black Hogwarts robes, though hers had twisted round to cover her from the front, the hood on backward over her face.

Elizabeth followed Jane to the kitchen, stumbling several times along the way. She pulled herself onto a stool, and, pushing the empty popcorn bowls and bottle of vodka aside, laid her cheek down on the cool tile of the counter. A few seconds later, Jane set a mug of coffee down in front of her and sat on the other stool. Elizabeth could sense, by the fact that she still hadn’t spoken aloud since they left the bedroom, her sister was not in the mood for pleasantries. She stole a hesitant look in her direction; yep, that was not a face of someone simply stopping by for a friendly cup of coffee and a chat. She waited a tension-filled moment, then cleared her throat. “How did you get in?”

“I still have a key.”

“Jane, I—” Elizabeth began.

“Lizzie, why on earth would you do something like that?”

Angry tears welled up in Jane’s eyes. Elizabeth was momentarily stunned into silence. What could she have done to make her so upset? “Something like what, Jane?”

Jane shook her head. “You know damn well the doctor said you shouldn’t drink alcohol—why would you deliberately do something you know could make you sick? You were so good about it the entire time you stayed with me! Then you move out, and the very first thing you do is get smashed with my fiancés little sister?!” She sniffed. “You were supposed to be an example for her of what an adult looks like!”

Elizabeth gave her a sheepish smile. “Well, I told you I wasn’t a paragon of maturity, didn’t I?”

“It’s not funny, Lizzie!” Jane shouted.
